Acquirer
The institution, or its agent, which acquires from the card acceptor the financial data relating to a transaction, and which initiates that data into an interchange system (AS2805).

Data Encryption Standard. A symmetrical encryption algorithm.

EFT / EFTPOS
Electronic Funds Transfer, electronic banking.

EMV
EMV?stands for Europay MasterCard and Visa and is the new EFTPOS standard that enables credit cards with chips to be accepted anywhere in the world. It offers increased security by allowing information that identifies the cardholder to be stored on the chip.

EMV Level 1
EMV approval level for mechanical and electrical processing (and driver software), which guarantees interoperability between cards and terminals.

EMV Level 2
EMV approval level for software layer (or kernel), which allows a transaction to be carried out using an EMV card.

ETSL
Electronic Transaction Services Limited (New Zealand’s largest EFT transaction switch).

EMVCo
Organisation formed to manage EMV standards ?currently owned by MasterCard, Visa and JCB.

Ethernet
A network cabling system.

FI
Financial institution (e.g. bank).

FLASH
Non-volatile memory.

FCC
Forecourt Controller

FST
FUSION Transactive's forecourt service terminal for the retail oil industry. It is a POS device on the forecourt that provides the interface between the customer and the system, and is the predecessor to the FUSION Transactive Pay@Pump Outoor Payment Terminal

GUI
Graphical user interface.

Hot list
"Hot" card numbers stored in the terminal for offline processing. Card PANs are checked against the hot list before offline authorisation is given.

Hardware security module.

Head office system

Integrated circuit card (smartcard).

ICR
Island Card Reader ?see DCA.

IFSF
International Forecourt Standards Forum, a protocol for common interconnectivity and communications between forecourt equipment.

Industry Relationships
A type of professional network/government/regulatory body that enables business professionals to network and collaborate by industry and business interests so that they can discuss interests, stay informed and share knowledge.

IPT
Indoor payment terminal. The card reader, display and printer at the counter inside the convenience store.

IP 67
Ingress Protection for equipment (environmental protection rating):
6 = totally protected against dust;
7 = protected against the effects of temporary immersion between 15cm and 1m for 30 minutes.

ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network.

ISO8583
International standard covering EFT messaging.

IXRetail
Schema for interfacing to retail databases (ARTS).

LAN
Local Area Network.

LCD
Liquid crystal display.

LED
Light emitting diode.

Logon
Exchange of authentication information and encryption keys between a terminal and acquiring institution, rending the terminal able to process online transactions.

LON
LONWorks network.

MAC
A checksum on a message calculated by the PIN pad using a secure key (the MAC key). The MAC is then added into the message so the receiver can verify that the message contents have not been tampered since leaving the sender, or to serve as a proof of identity of the sender.

MSR
Magnetic stripe reader.

MOP
Method of payment - payment type, e.g. credit card, cash, cheque.

NACS
National Association of Convenience Stores - it is the association for Convenience and Petroleum Retailing. NACS is an international trade association representing more than 2,200 retail and 1,800 supplier company members.

NAXML
Data interchange standard for electronic business document exchange within the convenience store industry (from NACS).

Offline
The link to the acquiring institution is currently down, meaning PINs must be verified locally (or not at all) and the transaction forwarded to the acquirer the next time they come online.

Online
The link to the acquiring institution is currently up, allowing PINs to be verified remotely by the acquirer, or completed, stored transactions to be forwarded to the acquirer.

OSA
Open System Architecture.

OPOS
COM-based standard for integrating POS hardware into Windows applications.

OPT Outdoor payment terminal for the retail oil industry. It includes the card reader, display and printer at the pump island.

PCI
Payment Card Industry.

PCI DSS
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard - A multifaceted security standard that includes requirements for security management, policies, procedures, network architecture, software design and other critical protective measures

PCI PED
Payment Card Industry PIN Entry Device - A security specification for EFT terminals, designed to secure the PIN information stored in a terminal from fraudulent activity

PED
PIN Entry Device ?the secure customer interface module of a payment terminal.

PIN
Personal identification number. A PIN is a substitute for a signature. It uniquely identifies the valid holder of a card.

PCATS
Petroleum Convenience Alliance for Technology Standards.

Post-authorisation
Often called a "post-auth". Request for authorisation after the transaction details are complete. At a site this means the sale is completed, petrol delivered, etc.

Pre-authorisation
Request for bank authorisation prior to the transaction being enacted. No sale total or details are known at this point. Sometimes called a "pre-auth" or an "auth".

RAM
Random access memory.

RDBMS
Relational Database Management System.

Reversal
Advice to an acquirer not to proceed with a transaction.

RS422
An Electronic Industry Association (EIA) standard for connecting serial devices.

RS485
An Electronic Industry Association (EIA) standard for multipoint communications.

Regulus
FUSION Transactive's forecourt controller for the retail oil industry.

Resellers

A reseller is a company or individual that purchases goods or services with the intention of on selling them rather than consuming or using them. This includes dealers.

RSA
Public key encryption standard (Rivest, Shamir and Adelman).

RTM
Retail Transaction Mediator

SAF
Store and Forward, a type of financial transaction performed with offline verification. Transactions that are authorised offline are held in the local system database and transferred in a batch to the appropriate institute.

SAM
Secure Access Module. Basically a smart card without the card - just large enough to hold the chip and contacts. SAMs are used in digital mobile phones and some EFTPOS terminal equipment.

SBC
Single Board Computer

Settlement
The closure and reconciliation of the current transaction batch.

Sirius
FUSION Transactive's back office system for the retail oil industry

Supplier
Anyone who provides goods or services to a company.

Switch
Central system that receives EFT transactions and forwards them through to one of many acquirers.

SBA
Server-based architecture.

Settlement

TCP/IP
TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is a family of protocols designed to transfer information across a network and provide information about the network. Enables users to send mail messages, share files and access remote applications across both LANs and WANs.

Terminal Manager
"Forecourt POS" application containing all business logic related to payment on the forecourt. Also an interface between a payment engine and OPTs/IPTs.

Thin client
Client-server architecture, where the client application is small and the majority of processing is done by the server application.

TTL
Transistor-transistor logic ?digital output.

Triple DES
Mode of DES that encrypts the data three times.

TVD
Tagging Visual Display

VGA
Analogue graphics display.

VSAT
Very small aperture terminal.

Velocity checking
A check performed on an EFT transaction, based on the customer card number, to determine frequency and geographical usage of the card (a check for fraudulent usage).

Visa PED
Visa PIN Entry Device certification programme.

WinEPS
